No DCE will disrespect an MP under my tenure – Local Govt Minister-Designate

The Minister-Designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has cautioned District Chief Executives (DCEs) across the country to desist from actions that show disrespect or sabotage towards Members of Parliament (MPs), emphasising the need for mutual respect and cooperation in Ghana’s local governance system.

During his vetting by the Parliamentary Appointments Committee on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Ahmed Ibrahim pledged to foster harmonious relationships between DCEs and MPs, a dynamic he believes is essential for effective governance at the local level.

Ahmed Ibrahim, who has served as a Whip in Parliament for 12 years, stated his commitment to leveraging his experience to mediate and promote productive partnerships. He assured the committee that his tenure would prioritise collaboration and dialogue.

“When given the nod, having been a Whip in Parliament for 12 years, I will not allow any DCE to disrespect any Member of Parliament,” he asserted.

“In the same way, I will also make sure there is a common platform for any DCE and MPs to be able to have frequent discussions for us to understand our job descriptions.”

He explained that clearly defined roles and open communication are vital for preventing misunderstandings and promoting a collaborative spirit between MPs and DCEs.

Ahmed Ibrahim’s remarks come as he prepares to lead a ministry that bridges national governance with local government structures, aiming to strengthen collaboration for Ghana’s development.
