Nigerian boxer Dolapo Omole ruled out of Paris Olympics

Nigerian featherweight Dolapo Omole has been forced to withdraw from the 2024 Paris Olympic Games after suffering a knee injury in training.

The 57kg boxer, who was one of three Nigerian fighters set to compete in the French capital, will be replaced by Ethiopian Leta Fikremariyam Yadesa.

Omole had defeated Yadesa to qualify for the Games at the African Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament in Dakar last September.

Omole’s coach, Adura Olalehin, confirmed the news to the Africa Boxing Confederation (AFBC), stating: “Due to a medical issue, Dolapo is not going to Paris.”

The two-time African featherweight champion expressed his disappointment at missing out on the Games.

“I’m depressed and hoping to rise again stronger,” he said. “The knee injury is so painful now; I wish myself a quick recovery.”

Nigeria will now be represented at the Olympics by Cynthia Ogunsemilore in the women’s lightweight 60kg category and Adams Olaore in the men’s heavyweight 92kg division.
