The Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation has officially launched the first-ever “Ghana Girls In ICT Trust”.
The trust aims to deliver a pipeline of trained and empowered girls and women while creating an enabling national environment for young women in ICT and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Addressing the media at the climax of an intensive training programme for this year’s cohort of the Girls-in-ICT programme in the Greater Accra Region on Wednesday (10 July), the sector minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful explained that the Ghana Girls In ICT Trust will be a public-private partnership.
“Funding like I say is always a challenge but with the trust in place now, I’m going to have a meeting with potential donors now from this meeting and several of them have expressed an interest in assisting us. Some were reluctant to do so because it was a purely governmental initiative.”
According to her, “The trust is going to be a public-private partnership so donor agencies, individuals, and companies are all welcome to be trustees and to consider funding the trust so they can include it in their annual budget and we can have a sustainable stream of funding for the project,” Owusu-Ekuful added.
Also present at the event were a host of professors from the University of Ghana, chiefs, ministers of state, Girls-in-ICT mentors, representatives from the African American Diaspora community, and over a thousand beneficiaries of this year’s Girls-in-ICT programme.
The event followed a two-day mentorship programme which was held at the Cedi Conference Centre at the University of Ghana, Legon, aimed at encouraging young basic school girls to choose career fields in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and most importantly, ICT.
This year’s event was under the theme “Leadership.”
Speaking at the climax of the event on Wednesday, 10th July, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo said the “Girls-in-ICT” programme resonates with her vision to train critical thinkers and technologically-inclined students.
“The Girls-in-ICT project aligns with my goal as Vice-Chancellor to train young people who are critical thinkers, technologically inclined, humane, culturally sensitive, and ready to provide leadership for the country and the continent,” Professor Appiah Amfo said.
