The heads of state of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) have met on Saturday (6 July) in Niamey, Niger to formalize the creation of the organization.
The leaders acknowledged the progress made since the creation of the alliance on the 16th of September 2023 with the adoption of the Liptako-Gourma Charter which strengthened the institutional architecture of the organization.
The summit was also marked by the announcement of the future projects of the AES such as the creation of an AES investment bank, a United Armed Force and a stabilisation fund.
The AES leaders also urged their respective ministers to develop additional protocols to address the implications of their countries’ withdrawal from ECOWAS.
Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger withdrew from ECOWAS earlier this year on 28 January.
Captain Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso, denounced the inhumane sanctions inflicted by ECOWAS on the peoples of the three countries.
The free movement of people and goods within the AES is also a priority and each of the heads of state reiterated their firm determination to make the AES a model of regional cooperation, solidarity and development.
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to ensure the smooth running of the organization.
