Korle Bu: Allied Health Professionals threaten to suspend outpatient services

The Korle Bu Chapter of the Federation of Allied Health Professionals will from Friday, August 2, suspend outpatient services at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital due to the hospital’s refusal to appoint an independent body to oversee their operations.

The group includes the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, the Ghana Physiotherapy Association, and the Ghana Society of Radiographers, among 15 other professional associations.

The professionals, currently managed by the hospital’s Medical Directorate, argue that their affairs are not being properly managed, necessitating the creation of a directorate to oversee their affairs.

Addressing the media, the local Chairman of the chapter, Dr. Francis Kwakye Antwi warned that if their demands are not addressed, a nationwide strike will begin on Monday, August 6.

“If the board and management do not advertise for the position of Director of Allied Health by close of midnight today, they don’t take that step to advertise, on Thursday we are going to start with work to rule which will aggravate into a full-blown strike. So on Friday which is August 2, we are going to suspend all OPD services.”

“On Monday [August 5], we are going to withdraw in-patient services and on Tuesday, which is August 6, if management has still not heeded our call, we are going to go into a full-blown strike.

“When on the 6th, Korle Bu does not see any positive feedback from the management and the board, we are going to escalate it to a nationwide strike.”
