NDC manifesto: I’ll ban government officials from snatching scholarships, says Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to overhaul the government scholarship programme to ensure that it serves its intended purpose of supporting underprivileged individuals.

Speaking at the launch of the NDC’s manifesto on Saturday (24 August) Mahama criticised the current system, which he claims has been compromised by government officials who use their influence to secure scholarships for their children, despite being able to afford the expenses themselves.

Mahama expressed his commitment to preventing conflicts of interest in the scholarship process, stating that under his administration, no government official or political appointee would be allowed to apply for these scholarships.

He described the current system as plagued by “kalabule,” a term meaning deceit or corruption, and emphasised the need for a more transparent and equitable process.

“Government scholarships have been fraught with a lot of ‘kalabule,’ meaning deceit. We want to streamline it, and as I’ve said, persons with conflicts of interest will not be allowed to apply for the scholarships. None of my ministers will do it,” Mahama declared.

He further stressed that scholarships should be reserved for children from underprivileged backgrounds who genuinely need financial support to further their education. Mahama’s proposed reforms aim to restore integrity to the scholarship program and ensure that it benefits those who need it the most.

“Any political appointee must not apply for the scholarships; you must pay. Children underprivileged, those who cannot afford it are the ones who must get the scholarship,” Mahama affirmed.
