Police have arrested a 40-year-old male adult following a robbery targeting Indian nationals at Low-Cost, a suburb of Konongo in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
He has been identified as Amid Tahiru and is said to be part of an eight-member armed gang. A security guard, Hlordeme George has also been picked up by the police to assist investigations.
Asaase News gathers that the robbers launched the attack at about noon on Monday (21 October) and had already stolen GHC130,000 in cash from victim Rishi Sane Kaniyalol and locked him up for hours.
Police sources said the robbers abandoned their getaway vehicle, a green Toyota Hilux pickup with registration number GT 6511-11.
With assistance from community members, police initiated a search that led to the arrest of suspect Amid Tahiru. He attempted to escape by jumping into a nearby river.
During the search, a Heckler and Koch MP5 rifle, also loaded with 37 live rounds of Luger 9mm ammunition, was found abandoned at the scene.
A search of the abandoned pickup revealed additional evidence, including two black face masks, two boxes containing 35 live rounds of Luger 9mm ammunition, a hand grading machine, a tape measure, and a car number plate (GT 700-09).
The green Toyota Hilux pickup has been impounded at the Konongo Divisional Headquarters, and the evidence, which includes 75 live rounds of Luger 9mm ammunition, is retained for investigation.
