Killian Komashie Threatens Legal Action Over Arrest During Protest

Killian Komashie has threatened to sue the state following his arrest during a protest, claiming his human rights were violated.

Speaking to the press after being released, Komashie described his arrest as “silly” and asserted that the state had breached his fundamental rights.

“I must file an urgent case against the state for breaching my fundamental human rights. Not only was I arrested, but I was also jailed. I will take legal action. We cannot allow this country to operate like a banana republic. The arrest was foolish, and I will file a case against the state,” he stated.

This incident occurred during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse and #StopGalamsey demonstrations organized by the Democracy Hub.

The protests, aimed at condemning the government’s failure to tackle illegal mining and its adverse environmental impacts, were marred by police brutality, the arrest of protesters—including minors—and violent clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement officers.

On Sunday, September 22, 2024, the second day of the three-day protest, nine individuals were arrested by the police for unlawful acts.

They were subsequently remanded into custody by the Accra Circuit Court.

The protest, led by the pressure group Democracy Hub, aimed to raise awareness about the pollution of water bodies due to illegal mining activities and the government’s lack of effective response.
