“Kayayei initiative” not only empowers women but also boosts local economies, says NEIP CEO

Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), says the graduation of 600 young women from the Kayayei Skills Empowerment Programme marks a significant milestone, not only for the individuals involved but also for the broader economic landscape of Ghana.

He underscored the far-reaching impact of the initiative during the graduation ceremony.

“This programme is about more than just individual empowerment. It’s about catalysing local economies and creating a ripple effect of economic growth and stability,” Nkansah emphasised.

The programme, driven by the vision of Vice-President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, provides comprehensive vocational training in areas such as soap and detergent making, baking, beads and jewellery making, décor, pedicure and manicure, and make-up artistry.

By equipping these young women with marketable skills, the initiative aims to transform their economic circumstances and enable them to contribute to their communities.

Nkansah highlighted the potential for these new entrepreneurs to create jobs, stimulate local markets, and drive innovation within their sectors.

“We are witnessing the birth of a new wave of entrepreneurs who will not only uplift themselves but also generate employment opportunities for others,” Nkansah noted.

Each graduate received a starter pack to help them launch their businesses, as well as a 1000 cedis stipend to support their initial ventures.

Nkansah also pointed out the collaborative effort behind the programme’s success, thanking the dedicated trainers, partner agencies such as GEA, YEA, GETFUND, and CTVET, and the supportive teams from the vice-president’s office and NEIP.

“This programme exemplifies what can be achieved when various stakeholders come together with a shared vision of empowerment and economic development,” he said.

Looking ahead, Nkansah assured continued support for the graduates, with plans for ongoing monitoring and assistance to ensure their businesses thrive.

The NEIP is also preparing to welcome the next cohort of trainees, further expanding the programme’s impact.

“This is just the beginning,” Nkansah concluded. With each new cohort, we are not only transforming lives but also building a stronger, more resilient economy for Ghana.”
