The trial of Daniel Asiedu, also known as Sexy Don Don, accused of murdering former Abuakwa North Member of Parliament (MP) Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu, has taken another dramatic turn.
The presiding judge, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, has called for a retrial following a split decision by the jury on Wednesday (4 November).
After weeks of legal proceedings, the seven-member jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict, with four members voting not guilty and three voting guilty.
The impasse prompted Justice Osei Marfo to invoke Section 285(4) of the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act, 1960 (Act 30), discharging the jury in accordance with the law.
Addressing the court, Justice Osei Marfo explained that the split decision made it impossible to conclude the case fairly, necessitating a fresh start.
Despite the inconclusive outcome, the accused, Daniel Asiedu, will remain in custody under the judge’s orders.
The case, which has drawn widespread public interest, is now set to resume on 20 January 2025, when a newly constituted jury will determine the fate of Asiedu.
The murder of Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu in February 2016 shocked the nation, and this retrial underscores the complexities surrounding the high-profile case.
