Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah has described the recent action by CAF to get Ghana to play her home games out of the country as a national embarrassment.
Appiah, who was the first captain to qualify Ghana’s Black Stars for the World Cup, made this position known in a tweet on X.
Stephen Appiah indicated that it is imperative to prioritize hosting games and protect the country’s footballing pride.
“Playing a qualifier outside Ghana, except in a tournament, is a national embarrassment. We must prioritize hosting our own games and protect our football pride,” he said.
The Ghana Football Association has been directed to provide CAF with an alternative venue after the approval for the Baba Yara Sports Stadium was withdrawn by the Football Governing Body.
The Sports Ministry has since directed the Ghana Football Association to present the University of Ghana Stadium and the Accra Sports Stadium which have seen some facelifts in recent times for inspection by CAF.
The Ministry argues that since the University of Ghana stadium has been able to host category 2 games, it is possible it can host category 3 games.
