From the global IT outage from Crowdstrike that affected airlines, banks and train stations etc to the Kenyan police banning protests in major cities like Nairobi and other surrounding cities until further notice, read a roundup of the most compelling news stories from Africa and beyond.
Here are some stories that made the headlines last week:
Kenya police ban protests in the capital
Kenyan police have banned protests in the centre of the capital, Nairobi, and surrounding areas “until further notice”, citing their leaderless nature that has made it difficult to enforce safety.
It comes after weeks of deadly anti-government protests in which scores of people have been killed.
Nairobi city centre has been the heart of the youth-led protests, which have also taken place across the country.
The protests began against unpopular tax rises but after they were withdrawn, have become broader, including for President William Ruto to resign.
Four arrested in multi-million dollar meth lab bust in South Africa
South African police have uncovered an industrial-scale meth lab and arrested four suspects, including two Mexicans, in one of the country’s biggest-ever drug busts.
The laboratory was discovered on a farm in Groblersdal, a small town in Limpopo province in the northeast of the country, the police said in a statement on Saturday.
Limpopo is the northernmost province of South Africa; it borders Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
Law enforcement agents found large quantities of chemicals, such as acetone, used in the manufacturing of illicit drugs, including crystal meth, with an estimated street value of 2 billion rand (US$109.5million), the statement said.
Côte d’Ivoire is first country to deploy University of Oxford’s R21 malaria vaccine
The first official use of the R21/Matrix-MTM malaria vaccine, co-developed by the University of Oxford and Serum Institute of India took place on Monday (15 July) in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
It will be subsequently rolled out in 38 districts across the country.
The new vaccine has been authorised by Ghana, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and the Central African Republic.
Global services slowly recovering after bug causes IT chaos
Businesses and services around the world are slowly recovering after a massive IT outage affected computer systems for hours on Thursday and Friday.
Businesses, banks, hospitals and airlines were among the worst-hit after cyber-security firm Crowdstrike issued a faulty software update which affected Microsoft Windows.
Crowdstrike’s CEO apologised for the disruption and said a fix had been issued, but admitted it could be “some time” before all systems were back up and running.
Joe Biden drops out of 2024 presidential race
The US president, Joe Biden, has announced that he will end his candidacy for re-election, saying “it is in the best interest of my party and the country”.
It comes four months before Americans go to the polls, upending the race for the White House.
It follows weeks of intense pressure from fellow Democrats after a faltering debate performance against the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, at the end of June.
