I’m still running as an Independent Candidate- Cynthia Morrison refutes U-turn claim

Hon Cynthia Morrison, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Agona West, has firmly stated that she will continue her campaign as an Independent Candidate, dispelling rumours that she is returning to the party.

In a recent phone interview on Adom FM’s EKOSIISEN program, monitored by MyNewsGH.com, Morrison emphasized her position amidst speculation surrounding her political future.

“The NPP hierarchy has indeed approached me, but I am still running as an Independent Candidate,” Morrison declared. “I want to make it clear: I was not offered 50 million cedis to change my mind. That claim is entirely false. I’m committed to my decision.”

Morrison’s comments come in light of a viral photo that surfaced, showing her with several NPP MPs, including caucus leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin and the MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong. However, she dismissed the significance of the image. “Those photos are just normal pictures; they don’t reflect my political stance or intentions,” she explained.

The political landscape in Ghana has shifted significantly since the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, declared Morrison’s seat, along with three others, vacant on October 17, 2024. This declaration has altered the balance of power within Parliament, elevating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs to the Majority Caucus and relegating the NPP to the Minority.

This development means the NDC and the NPP both have the opportunity to hold 136 seats in the House.

Unless more MPs decide to change their affiliations, the competition for the Majority Caucus will be intense.
