Asamoah Gyan has provided insights surrounding his infamous penalty miss during the 2010 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals.
In an emotionally charged Instagram Live session, Gyan addressed the criticism he faced after the missed penalty against Uruguay and called out his teammates for their lack of support during the fallout.
“Anyone could have taken the penalty. Why would I deliberately miss it and disgrace Ghana? You were all afraid of the pressure. Everybody was scared, cowards!” Gyan said, his frustration evident.
The penalty miss, which could have secured Ghana’s historic progression to the semifinals, remains a painful memory for Ghanaians.
While the miss led to widespread criticism from fans, Gyan revealed that he felt abandoned by his teammates, whom he accused of failing to defend him during the storm of public backlash.
“And then someone claimed they wanted to take it, but I took it. Why won’t you come out and affirm it if it’s true?” he questioned.
“You were happy to let them insult the taker. None of you came out to speak, deny it, or explain that I was the first-choice penalty taker.”
Gyan’s words reflect years of bottled-up frustration, not only with the fans who vilified him but also with the silence of his teammates. He lamented the lack of solidarity and the role it played in amplifying his public disgrace.
“The fans can say whatever they like, but you, my teammates, should have defended me. Instead, you were scared, and when they mentioned my name, you kept quiet while I faced it all alone,” Gyan said.
