Carlos Ahenkorah, whose dramatic ballot-snatching incident during the 2021 election of a Speaker for Ghana’s 8th Parliament shocked the nation, has broken his silence on the personal and political ramifications of his actions.
The incident, which occurred during the election of Alban Bagbin of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the NPP’s Prof. Mike Oquaye, remains one of the most chaotic moments in the country’s parliamentary history.
In an interview on UTV monitored by MyNewsGH, Ahenkorah discussed how the events impacted his personal life and family.
“As a family man, it wasn’t easy,” he admitted. “My children and family had to endure the fallout, especially on social media. It was everywhere.”
The widespread attention placed his loved ones under intense scrutiny, creating a difficult situation for the MP away from the political spotlight.
Despite the challenges, Ahenkorah stood firm in his conviction that his actions were driven by loyalty to his party. “I don’t regret my actions,” he stated unapologetically.
“As a member of the NPP, I believed I was acting in the best interest of my party at the time.” However, he also acknowledged that his decision was a personal one and not reflective of official party directives.
“Nana Akufo-Addo didn’t endorse or applaud what I did,” Ahenkorah revealed, hinting at the disapproval of the party’s leadership.
Reflecting on the chaotic scenes that unfolded during the parliamentary election, Ahenkorah expressed a nuanced perspective.
While he remained unapologetic about his motivations, he admitted that his actions were not something he would repeat.
“Looking back, I wouldn’t do it again,” he said, signaling a willingness to approach similar situations differently in the future.
