Honeymoon-demanding Mahama won’t do anything meaningful – Bawumia

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has reiterated his argument that as a presidential candidate qualified for two four-year terms, he would be accountable to the electorate when elected President since he would seek a second term unlike his main contender, John Mahama, who is only qualified for one term and would not come back to the people to seek their mandate.

Dr Mahamudu stated that whereas he has transformative policies to implement when he is elected President of Ghana, John Mahama is merely interested in the Presidency to enjoy a honeymoon, stressing that John Mahama has nothing to offer citizens.

He mentioned that his digitalization agenda, for instance, is what is needed to transform the country not policies such as rearing guinea fowls which were implemented by John Mahama when he was President.

Dr Bawumia made the comments when he addressed NPP supporters and sympathizers in Akropong in the Eastern Region, on Saturday, 3 August 2024, during the political rally dubbed the “Ofie Mega Walk”.

“Ghana is going into the digitalisation age, not the ‘akonfem ‘age. Vote for me so that we can also learn from the Europeans to develop our nation. We are bringing new policies. Do you think their flagbearer can be a president for just four years? He’s also seeking for honeymoon, meaning he won’t do anything.

However, I want to be President for eight years meaning I’ll come back to make accountability after my first term. He [Mahama] won’t come back to make accountability Ghana needs a new president with new ideas with integrity” Dr Bawumia said.

John Mahama was elected President on December 7, 2013. He contested the 2016 Presidential Election for a second term but lost to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Having served a one four-year term already, he is constitutionally barred from running for another term if he when this year’s presidential elections. In contrast, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia can run for a second four-year term if he wins this year’s election.

Dr Bawumia has argued that a person qualified for only one term, as in the case of John Mahama, is unlikely to be accountable given that he knows he would not seek the people’s votes again if he wins.
