Some 27 children in the Ho Municipality have received a three-month intensified training in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.
The training was organised by a Ho-based non-profit organisation, Genious Brainey IT. The program is called Future of Technology (Futech).
According to the founder and chief executive officer of the organisation, Desmond Kitsi, the children were trained in robotics, graphic design, computer programming and website development.
He said, “The Futech project is a holistic programme that is curated to support the development of young people in the Volta Region, especially with skills in entrepreneurship, digital stills and leadership”.
The participants made presentations on website development, graphic designing and pitching digital solutions to solving problems of climate change.
They were awarded a certificate of participation. This year’s graduation is the fourth since the start of the initiative.
Speaking at the ceremony held in Ho on Friday (20 September), the Ho municipal education director, Esther Adzoa Yeboah Agyemang, said, “This is a very laudable initiative because, as we are aware, we have our standard base curriculum now that incorporates STEM education into the basic school and so there’s the need for us to expose our children, especially to technology.”
She advocated for the establishment of a STEM school in the Volta Region.
The Ho municipal National Youth Authority’s (NYA) director, Charles Kwesi Gomenu, praised the initiative as he cited examples of job opportunities the children are exposed to.
He urged children to support their wards to have such training.
Gomenu also expressed concern over no STEM-dedicated schools in the Volta Region; he therefore appealed to the Ministry of Education to establish one in the region to help bridge the gap.
