Ghana’s national beach soccer team, the Black Sharks, have named a 16-man squad for their crucial 2024 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against West African neighbour Côte d’Ivoire. The match kicks off on Sunday, 21 July 2024.

Head Coach Daniel Neequaye Kotey has selected a balanced squad with three goalkeepers, five defenders, and eight attackers for the upcoming encounter.

The Black Sharks are determined to qualify for the finals in Egypt after missing out on the previous three tournaments.

Their most recent near miss came in Mozambique 2022, where a narrow 11-12 aggregate defeat to Egypt in the qualifiers ended their hopes.

The COVID-19 pandemic also disrupted their participation in Senegal 2021, while they failed to meet competition criteria in Egypt 2018.

Ghana, currently ranked 16th in Africa and 82nd in the world, faces a stern test against Côte d’Ivoire.

Their opponents boast a more consistent record in the Beach Soccer AFCON, having only missed two editions since its launch in 2006.

The Elephants, ranked 15th on the continent and 81st globally, even reached the final in 2009 and 2013.

The Black Sharks made their AFCON debut in 2013 but exited the group stage without a win.

They managed consecutive seventh-place finishes in 2015 and 2016, with a glimmer of individual brilliance—Alexander Adjei’s 15-goal record at the 2015 tournament remains the highest at a single Beach Soccer AFCON.

Coach Kotey hopes to secure a strong home advantage in the first leg to ease the pressure ahead of the return fixture in Abidjan, scheduled for 26–28 July 2024.

Fourteen nations will battle it out in the two-legged qualifiers, with the seven victors joining hosts Egypt at the finals later this summer.
