Ghana is demonstrating leadership in addressing housing deficit, says Shelter Afrique boss

The managing director of Shelter Afrique Development Bank, Thierno Habib Hann has lauded the government’s effort aimed at reducing the country’s housing deficit.

Government over the past few years rolled out various interventions to help close Ghana’s housing deficit which currently stands at 1.8 million units.

The Ministry of Works and Housing in 2023 launched an initiative to build 8,000 housing units at Pokuase under the government’s affordable housing units dubbed: “My Home My Peace.”

The initiative is expected to be replicated in Kumasi.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday(18 July), Habib Hann said, “We like the leadership Ghana is taking to help solve the housing deficit. ”

Transform slums

Habib Hann also proposed the formulation of legislation with the support of the private sector to help eradicate slums in Africa.

“When I’m landing in Accra, Lagos, Conakry, Nairobi, anywhere in Africa you have the same sort of constructions (slums) in the middle of the city, so I think we have a major work to do within our cities, and this is what India once more has been successful at,” he said.

“So in Mumbai what they have done is identify a slum area and have legislation to eradicate slums. So that legislation is a public-private partnership framework where you bring on board the local government, slum dwellers association and then a developer who has experience in building affordable homes and financiers.”

Habib Hann added, “So what they have done is identify the slum area, clean the area, and move the slum dwellers into temporary housing for maybe six months to give the developer time to build high-rise building and release a big chunk of the land for other development purpose and recoup their investment…”
