The International Educators’ Summit, a ground-breaking initiative organised by the Ghana Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), has kicked off in Accra, Ghana.
This summit represents a pivotal moment in the global discourse on education with an unyielding commitment to shaping the future of education and will convene international educators to address the pressing challenges faced by Ghana and the broader African continent.
Delivering his keynote address at the opening ceremony of the three-day event, running from 5-7 July, 2024, under the theme, “Re-imagining Education for the Future We Seek: Africa and the World in Dialogue” at the International Community School in Madina, the Minister of Education, Yaw Osei Adutwum, lauded the Ghana Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) for organising the summit and propagating the essence of education in the country.
“I must commend the ASCD for their tremendous efforts and commitment in ensuring that, future leaders are modelled through their leadership, mentorship and contribution through educational activities. Let us emulate the good works of the ASCD,” he noted.
Adutwum also opined that “the government is also ensuring that, every Ghanaian child is not left behind and as a result, we have put together some policies, including the Free SHS programme, the STEM programmes and the provision of conducive infrastructure and employment of teaching staff, to augment the deficit we face in the various schools.”
Also speaking at the opening ceremony, the President of Ashesi University, Patrick Awuah called on the government and stakeholders to work assiduously to improve the literacy rate in the country and across the continent.
“We have come far as a country as far as literacy is concerned. But more needs to be done. Literacy can help solve a lot of problems. Beyond the traditional classroom, we also need to employ effective and unconventional teaching methods and practices to improve learning basic skills like reading and writing,” Awuah said.
