From stage to parliament: Entertainment stars who won big in Ghana’s 2024 elections

The 2024 general elections in Ghana delivered unexpected twists, including the rise of entertainment industry figures in politics.

Harnessing their influence and deep connections with the populace, these individuals secured parliamentary seats, blending their artistic charisma with political ambition.

Here is a list of entertainment personalities who won parliamentary seats in the 2024 elections:

Kwame A Plus: An independent voice for Gomoa Central

Musician and social commentator Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, claimed the Gomoa Central seat as an independent candidate with 14,277 votes against his closest rival, Nana Eyiah Quansah (NPP), who secured 11,637 votes. A vocal critic of mainstream politics, A Plus’s appeal as an outsider resonated with constituents, solidifying his position as a fresh, unifying voice in Ghana’s political discourse.

Baba Sadiq Abdulai: A new chapter for Okaikwei Central

Baba Sadiq Abdulai, a music entrepreneur and NDC candidate, turned his creative leadership into political success in Okaikwei Central. Running for the first time, he narrowly defeated Patrick Boamah of the NPP with a total of 15,383 against his opponent, who got 14,949 votes.

Sadiq’s campaign capitalized on his deep connections with the youth and his vision for leveraging arts and culture to drive development.

John Dumelo: Triumph in Ayawaso West Wuogon

Actor-turned-politician John Dumelo made a remarkable comeback, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ayawaso West Wuogon. After narrowly losing the seat in 2020, Dumelo persevered to clinch a decisive victory with 47,560 votes over the incumbent, Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who got a total of 39,214.

Dumelo’s victory not only ended the NPP’s dominance in the area but also demonstrated the power of grassroots mobilisation and his growing rapport with constituents, particularly young voters.
