Founders’ Day: Nkrumah is the only Ghanaian with a Memorial Day in his honour – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has paid glowing tribute to Kwame Nkrumah for his role in Ghana’s independence struggle, stressing that his pivotal role in Ghana gaining her independence is “undeniable”.

In the President’s 2024 Founders’ Day address on Saturday, August 3, 2024, he described Kwame Nkrumah as a charismatic visionary leader who played a role in founding Ghana. He however disagreed with the notion that Kwame Nkrumah should be regarded as the sole founder of Ghana, noting that for Nkrumah’s role, Parliament passed a law establishing a Memorial Day in his honour.

“Kwame Nkrumah with his charismatic visionary leadership was undoubtedly a major actor in the final lap of our journey to independence and that is why despite the several unfortunate things that happened after independence under his watch, Parliament in 2019, decided to memorialise his date of birth as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, the only Ghanaian so far to be so honoured in our history,” President Akufo-Addo said.

In March 2019, Parliament amended the Public Holidays Act, 2001 (Act 601) to provide for January 7, August 4, and September 21 as additional statutory public holidays and for the celebration of May 25 and July 1 as commemorative days.

The holiday on August 4, celebrated as Founders’ Day ( not Founder’s Day) in honour of the persons who founded Ghana, has sparked controversy with accusations that the. Akufo-Addo administration is hellbent on obliterating or downplaying the role of Kwame Nkrumah in Ghana’s independence struggle. But President Akufo-Addo and his administration have strenuously rejected the accusations.
