Fatimatu Abubakar celebrates shift from insults to ideas in politics

The Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar, has expressed her satisfaction with the evolution of the country’s political landscape, highlighting a shift towards policy-driven campaigns rather than divisive rhetoric.

Speaking on Asaase Radio’s The Forum on Saturday (31 August), Abubakar reflected on the significant changes she has witnessed in Ghanaian politics since her entry into active politics.

“I’m excited about one thing and that is the fact that elections have become about policies, ideas and issues and not insults,” she said.

“We’ve transitioned so much within the short period that I’ve been in active politics, at least from the time that I completed university in 2010 to date.”

Abubakar recalled the tense atmosphere of earlier political engagements, where animosity often overshadowed discourse.

“I remember the times we used to go to the studios and you waving, greet your opponent and they won’t respond; they will look the other way. The next minute, slaps are flying around,” she recounted.

She praised the current focus on the quality of arguments in political debates, emphasising the importance of dialogue over aggression.

“These days, it’s about the quality of your argument. Those who can’t, they will shout, but at least people are verbal and it is always better to resort to dialogue rather than violence,” she added.
