Family blames death of son on negligence of Ghana National College authorities

The family of a final-year student, Theophilus Ansah, at the Ghana National College in the Central Region is blaming the school and its authorities for the death of their son.

According to the family, if the school and its authorities had taken their jobs of seeking the welfare of students seriously, their son would not have died.

Addressing the press at their family residence, the family said the school’s infirmary, which is supposed to provide at least first aid to the students, was not working at the time their son visited the facility.

Even though his parents insisted he should come home considering his health Theophilus insisted he had examinations and did not want to miss them as it was a preparatory exam towards the impending WASSCE.

He is said to have taken some drugs he bought from a pharmacy and laid in his room the whole weekend without any proper care.

Theo, as he was affectionately called was said to have vomited throughout the period the examination lasted but no invigilator questioned his movement to and fro the examination hall.

He became extremely weak and that was when one Mr Alhassan working on the orders of his parents sought permission from his housemaster to take him to the hospital.

What’s even more worrying according to the family is that after spending three days in the hospital, no teacher including his housemaster visited him at the hospital and it took his parents who travelled from Tarkwa to Cape Coast where he was hospitalized for the attention of the school authorities to be drawn to the fact that their son has been hospitalized.
