Expired Rice Controversy: Let’s Address the Issue, Not Politics– Kwadwo Poku

The campaign aide for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia, Kwadwo Nsafoah Poku, has expressed that the “expired rice” issue should not be viewed as a political matter and should remain free from politicization.

During a panel discussion on TV3’s KeyPoints, Kwadwo Poku contended that the entities involved in the “expired rice” controversy—namely Buffer Stock, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), and Lamens—are not politically motivated, and therefore, the situation should not be politicized.

“The companies mentioned by my colleague Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa are not politically affiliated. They are not seeking re-election. This is fundamentally a criminal issue,” he stated.

Kwadwo Poku further noted that this revelation should have emerged in February, as the matter has been unresolved since December.

He stressed the need for this issue to be treated as a criminal offense and called for a thorough investigation.

He urged the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to expedite their inquiries and hold accountable those found guilty if Sam Okudzeto’s claims are substantiated.

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has reported that approximately 22,000 bags of 50 kg Moshosho rice imported from India were deemed safe for consumption at the time of testing.

Joseph Yaw-Bernie, the FDA’s Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs, remarked that “we assessed the quality of the product” when the manufacturer sought internationally recognized certification.

In an interview on Joy FM’s Midday News on Thursday, November 21, he confirmed that comprehensive tests conducted by the FDA, the Centre for Scientific Research (CSIR), and an accredited laboratory in India verified that the rice met the required quality standards.
