The Special Voting exercise, a key prelude to Ghana’s 7 December general elections, is underway at designated polling stations across 14 regions.
The process enables individuals, including electoral officials, security personnel, and media representatives, to cast their ballots early, ensuring their availability for election duties on the main voting day.
The Electoral Commission (EC) disclosed that 131,478 eligible voters—representing 0.007% of the registered electorate—are expected to participate in today’s exercise, which runs from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.
However, special voting in the Eastern and Western Regions has been postponed to December 5 following an EC directive to reprint ballot papers due to a reported breach of security seals.
Ashanti
Turn out has been impressive across the Ashanti Region with over 20,000 voters expected to cast their ballots.
Voting in Offinso North has yet to begin as of 9:00 am in the due to a logistical setback involving the voter register.
According to the Electoral Commission (EC) officials in the constituency, the voter register required for the single polling station with 569 registered voters was not included in the materials dispatched to the area.
The situation has left voters at the polling center frustrated as many arrived early to cast their ballots.
Gunshots in Bawku
There have been reports of gunshots in the Bawku Central Constituency of the Upper East Region, disrupting the process.
The military has been called in to intervene and restore calm. No injuries or deaths have been reported.
The voting process has since resumed as the military patrols the streets.
Stakeholders
Political party agents have been deployed to monitor the exercise and report any major incident that unfold.
Ashanti Regional NDC Chairman Augustus Nana Akwasi Andrews expects a 74 per cent turnout.
Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the EC, reassured the public of the process’s integrity during a recent Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, reiterating the Commission’s commitment to transparency and fairness.
Ballots cast during this exercise will not be counted immediately.
Instead, they will be secured and tallied alongside the general election votes on 7 December, ensuring they are included in the final results.
