A Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, has addressed the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) after rejecting their request to observe the upcoming elections.
In an interview on TV3 on Monday, November 25, Dr. Bossman Asare explained that the EC allows organizations interested in observing elections to apply but clarified that approval is not automatic.
He emphasized that the commission conducts a thorough background check on applicants, including an evaluation of their track record and experience in election observation.
Dr. Asare stated, “We allow all those who want to observe to apply. Once you apply, we review your track record, experience in observation, and other relevant criteria.
“We have a team that assesses applications. If you are denied, you can still petition the commission. In fact, an international observer group that was initially denied petitioned the commission. Observation is not an automatic right.”
His remarks follow criticism from civil society organizations, including the Centre for Conflict Resolution-Ghana (CENCOR) and CDD-Ghana, which accused the EC of unfairly denying them accreditation to serve as election observers. Dr. Asare reiterated that the EC’s decisions are guided by procedures and criteria designed to ensure credible observation of the electoral process.
