The Deputy Attorney General, Diana Asonaba Dapaah, has applauded officials of the Ghana Police Service over their professionalism during the recent Democracy Hub demonstration.
During an exclusive interview on Kumasi-based Pure FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Mrs Diana Asonaba Dapaah highlighted what the law said about demonstrations. According to her, the law does not stop anyone from demonstrating but the law condemns obstructing traffic.
She further cleared the air about reports that bystanders were arrested among the protesters. According to her, the videos shared online have vindicated the police.
“I am so proud of the police and how they displayed professionalism. People insulted the police but after the whole evidence was brought out, it would be seen that protesters who claimed that they were bystanders were exposed when the videos came out and they were seen actively involved in the destruction during the demonstration. There is a lot of falsehood spread in this arrest including the lie about arresting a pregnant woman.” She revealed
She also condemned protesters for blocking the roads while demonstrating describing it as unlawful.
“We might all be interested in this protest but it doesn’t mean you have the right to block the roads when people need to take their family members and loved ones to the hospital. According to the Act, you can’t obstruct traffic, you can’t cross that order. There was a nationwide demonstration by the NDC recently, no one was arrested”, she argued
She emphasized that the law encourages demonstration but protesters should not trample on the rights of others while demonstrating. She condemned the act of burning and destroying of proprieties by the protesters as well.
