Decline in youth NEET rate indicates various interventions are yielding results, says CTVET boss

The director general of the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), Fred Kyei Asamoah has attributed the latest drop in number of unemployed persons in Ghana is an indication that the various interventions being rolled out by the government including Free SHS is yielding positive results.

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has released the 2023 Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey (AHIES) report, which reveals that over two million young people in Ghana, aged 15-35, are not in education, employment, or training (NEET).

The survey shows that females account for the majority, with 1.2 million, compared to 715,691 males.

The Greater Accra Region has the highest number of NEET youth, with 565,360, followed by the North East Region. The youth NEET rate is higher in urban areas (20.6%) than in rural areas (15.0%).

However, there has been a significant decline in the NEET rate, from 24.1% in Q3 2022 to 18.2% in Q3 2023, representing a 5.9 percentage point decrease.

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (16 July), Asamoah said the development is good news.

“Looking at the number for 2023, I think it is good news for the country because the release did compare figures from 2023 to 2022, and it says it fell by 5.9% which tells you that even though there is a population increase from 2022 to 2023, the needs number has gone down.”

“So that is a good sign for what the government and the people of Ghana are doing because moving from 24.1% to 18.2%, not going along with the population increase, it means that various interventions such as Free SHS and TVET are working,” he said.

“If you look at our situation, and as a developing nation, it is a good news to see the various interventions are yielding results,” Asamoah said.
