The CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Da Costa Aboagye, has refuted claims that he has abandoned his post to travel internationally, leaving his responsibilities unattended.
The allegations, reported by the Day Break newspaper on Thursday (29 August), suggested that Aboagye’s frequent absence from the country was hindering the implementation of crucial management decisions within the health sector.
Addressing these claims on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) the same day, Aboagye clarified that any travel undertaken is strictly in line with the necessary procedures.
He emphasised that his international engagements are focused on attracting investment to Ghana’s health sector, particularly highlighting the global interest generated by the NHIA’s ‘Preventive Promotive Approach’ to tackling noncommunicable diseases.
“As CEO, I cannot just wake up and say that I’m going some[where]; you have to follow due process,” Aboagye stated. “I’m attracting international investment into the country by the presentations I’m doing, so it cannot be right that I have just on my own just said I’m going somewhere or this, but the good work that we are doing with Ghana has generated international attention.”
He further explained that his responsibilities extend beyond national borders due to his role as the chair of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
With the ongoing monkeypox (mpox) outbreak, Aboagye stressed that his duties require him to maintain an active international presence.
“I chair the African CDC Board for Disease Control. Now there is monkeypox, so my work actually transcends over borders… there is monkeypox outbreak, so I cannot abandon my work.”
