The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has strongly condemned the wave of violence and unrest that erupted in parts of the country following the 2024 general elections.
In a statement released on Tuesday (10 December), the conference described the turmoil as an affront to Ghana’s foundational values of peace, unity, and respect for human life.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the acts of violence, rioting, and looting that have disrupted peace and stability in parts of our beloved country,” the statement read.
“This wave of unrest has led to the loss of lives, destruction of property, and deepened divisions among our citizens. Such actions are unacceptable and go against the core values of peace, unity, and respect for life that we, as a nation, hold dear.”
The Catholic Bishops called for an immediate cessation of violence and urged Ghanaians to safeguard the peace that has been a cornerstone of the country’s democratic journey.
“The use of violence, intimidation, and destruction to express political disagreement not only undermines the principles of democracy but also destabilises our society, bringing harm to the most vulnerable among us,” the statement emphasised.
The conference directly addressed political leaders, imploring them to exercise responsible leadership in this critical period.
“It is crucial that you take a stand against violence, clearly denounce any unlawful actions taken by your supporters, and use your influence to restore calm and respect for the rule of law,” they urged.
“Your role as leaders goes beyond seeking power; it involves guiding your followers with wisdom, promoting peace, and ensuring the well-being of every Ghanaian.”
The bishops also called on Ghana’s security forces to act decisively against perpetrators of violence, regardless of their political affiliations.
“We also urge the Ghana Police and other security services to remain vigilant and professional,” the statement continued.
“Deal more decisively with all those involved in the mayhem, treating them as the criminals that they are, regardless of their party affiliations, in the effort to maintain peace and order while acting swiftly and fairly to protect citizens and property. Justice must be served!”
In a unifying appeal, the bishops encouraged religious leaders, civil society groups, and citizens to join hands in restoring peace and harmony.
“It is only through dialogue, mutual respect, and unity that we can overcome our differences and move forward as one people,” they declared.
The statement concluded with prayerful hope for Ghana’s future: “May God bless Ghana with peace, harmony, and healing in the aftermath of these turbulent events. We remain hopeful that with commitment from all sectors of society, our nation will emerge stronger, united, and more determined to uphold the common good for all Ghanaians.”
