As Ghana prepares to host Sudan in a crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Thursday (10 October) at the Accra Sports Stadium, we take a look back at the Black Stars’ history at this iconic venue.
Though the Baba Yara Stadium has become the primary home ground for the national team in recent years, the Accra Sports Stadium has played a significant role in the Black Stars’ journey.
Since the early 2000s, the stadium has hosted at least one of Ghana’s matches in 16 of the last 24 years.
Black Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium
The Black Stars’ most recent match at the Accra Sports Stadium took place in 2023 when they faced Liberia in a friendly.
Goals from Ernest Nuamah, Mohammed Kudus, and Jordan Ayew helped secure a 3-1 victory for Ghana, maintaining their solid record at the venue.
Overall, the national team has played 38 games at the stadium since the turn of the century. This includes eight matches from two AFCON tournaments hosted in Ghana (2000 and 2008), ten AFCON qualifiers, and eight FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Additionally, the team has played 12 friendly matches at the stadium, making friendlies the most common fixture there.
Ghana’s overall win rate at the Accra Sports Stadium stands at an impressive 71.05%, with 27 victories in 38 matches.
The team has drawn six times (15.79%) and lost just five matches (13.16%). Notably, the Black Stars have remained unbeaten at the venue since 2008, when they suffered a semi-final defeat to Cameroon in that year’s AFCON.
In their last 14 games at the stadium, Ghana has won 11 times and drawn three.
The Black Stars have scored 79 goals and conceded just 28 at the Accra Sports Stadium, averaging 2.08 goals scored per game and 0.74 goals conceded.
These statistics highlight both Ghana’s attacking strength and defensive resilience when playing at home.
Head-to-Head with Sudan
Thursday (10 October) opponents, Sudan, have faced the Black Stars twice at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Both matches, which took place in 2001 and 2009, were FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and the Sudanese team failed to score in either game, losing both encounters and conceding three goals in total.
Despite Ghana’s strong record at the Accra Sports Stadium, recent performances under coach Otto Addo have been inconsistent.
In six games under his leadership, the Black Stars have a 33.3% win rate, with two wins, two draws, and two losses.
The team has scored ten goals (1.67 per game) but has also conceded ten, leaving them with a goal difference of zero.
Sudan, managed by former Black Stars captain and head coach Kwesi Appiah, enters this contest in better form.
The Falcons of Jediane have won six of their last ten games (a 60% win rate), drawn two, and lost two. They have scored 13 goals (1.3 per game) and conceded six (0.6 per game).
As the Black Stars prepare to face Sudan in this crucial AFCON qualifier, their historical dominance at the Accra Sports Stadium provides a source of confidence.
However, with Sudan’s improved form under Kwesi Appiah, Ghana will need to be at their best to maintain their impressive record at this storied venue.
