Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reaffirmed his commitment to tackling corruption by leveraging digitalisation if his party is re-elected.
Speaking to key stakeholders at Bipoa in Afigya Sekyere East on Wednesday (6 November) Dr. Bawumia highlighted the party’s achievements in reducing corruption through technology and vowed to eliminate it in his next government.
“Digitalization has been incredibly beneficial, especially for the poor, as it removes the need to meet someone in person who might demand a bribe. Now, people can conduct their business directly from their phones without anyone asking for a bribe,” Dr Bawumia said, emphasising the role of digital tools in reducing human interactions that could lead to bribery.
A key example of these efforts, according to Dr Bawumia, has been the identification and removal of ghost names from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) payroll, saving the country over GHC400 million.
“I realised that ghost workers all shared one issue – they lacked fingerprints. So, I reached out to the Director General of SSNIT, Dr. Ofori, and proposed using the Ghana Card to identify these ghost workers,” he recounted.
“He agreed, and once we implemented the system, we identified 29,000 ghost workers on the payroll. We can now confidently say that the ghost worker issue in the public sector payroll is resolved, thanks to the Ghana Card.”
Dr Bawumia assured Ghanaians that his administration would be relentless in using digitalization to make corruption a thing of the past if elected on 7 December.
