Bagbin adjourned Parliament to ”save his face”, says Prof Ayesu

An associate professor of history and the dean of students at Heritage Christian University College, Ebenezer Ayesu has said the decision by the Speaker of Parliament to adjourn the House indefinitely was a ” face-saving act”

Last week, the Supreme Court directed Parliament to recognise and allow the four Members of Parliament whose seats were declared vacant by the Speaker on Thursday (17 October 2024) to continue to serve as MPs until the case is determined.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, declared four MPs’ seats vacant on Thursday (17 October).

In a dramatic turn of events,  Bagbin adjourned the House indefinitely on Tuesday.

“By Article 104, the numbers are not sufficient for us to take decisions,” the Speaker announced on Tuesday (22 October).

He further explained that Article 104 (1) stipulates: “Except as otherwise provided in this constitution, matters in Parliament shall be determined by the votes of the majority of members present and voting, with at least half of all the Members of Parliament present.”

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday ( 23 October), Ayesu said Bagbin’s decision was unnecessary.

“It was unnecessary, the action he took the other time and what he did yesterday (Tuesday 22 October) was just a face-saving act,” he said.
