A tragic fire at Atonsu Bokuro in the Asokwa Municipality of the Ashanti Region has claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy and destroyed several properties.
The incident just before 8 a.m. on Monday (18 November), prompting a swift rescue operation by residents and personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
Ashanti Regional Spokesperson for the Fire Service, DO2 Peter Addai, told Asaase News that the charred remains of the deceased were discovered after the fire was extinguished.
“We promptly dispatched the fire tender from BOST, and upon arrival, the fire was already fully ablaze. While they worked to extinguish it, they called for backup, so we quickly sent the fire tender from Kumasi Metro to provide additional support.
“A number of items were destroyed, including LPG cylinders, ceiling fans, fridges, clothes, and more. Unfortunately, a 17-year-old boy lost his life in the incident. However, we managed to save the adjoining buildings during our operations,” he disclosed.
Ghana recorded 658 fire outbreaks between January and October, up from 569 incidents in the same period in 2023.
Speaking at the national launch of the 2024-25 bushfire prevention campaign, the national chief fire officer, Julius Kunuor, attributed the increase in fires across the country to human negligence.
