Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah has rejected criticism from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), defending the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s record on regional road development.
This follows comments by the opposition party’s national chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah who claimed the NPP has underperformed in the road sector.
“We awarded contracts under the cocoa road project to fix your roads, but the NPP misled you into believing they would complete it once in power. Yet here we are, and your road remains untarred.”, Mr Asiedu Nketiah told voters during a campaign tour of Achiaase in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.
“And so, if Akufo-Addo goes to parliament to say his government has completed 12,000 road projects and that his government has outperformed. When Bawumia or Opoku Prempeh comes to campaign ask them to point to just one road contract in the Ashanti Region”, he stated.
Addressing the press on Thursday (7 November) however, Minister Osei Mensah highlighted the NPP administration’s achievements, stating that over 2,000 kilometres of road infrastructure have been completed under 374 contracts.
“As of September 30, the government has completed 2,145 kilometers of roads across 374 contracts in the Ashanti Region—a truly unprecedented achievement. I believe this accomplishment deserves commendation for President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. With over 12,000 such projects completed nationwide; Ashanti’s significant portion is noteworthy. It’s surprising, then, to hear claims that we’ve underperformed on road infrastructure as a government.”, he said.
The Minister emphasized that the government would continue to embark on more road projects to cater to the needs of residents in the region.
This commitment to infrastructure development demonstrates the NPP’s focus on improving the quality of life for Ashanti Region residents.
