President Nana Akufo-Addo has unveiled plans to establish a new district in the Ahafo Region, with the town of Mim set to serve as its capital, marking a significant administrative shift for the area.
Announcing the move in Goaso during a meeting with Ahafo regional stakeholders and executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Akufo-Addo highlighted that the Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, is currently crafting the necessary legislative instrument to formalise the district’s creation.
This development, he said, responds to a longstanding appeal from the chiefs and residents of Mim.
“The chiefs and people of Mim have submitted a petition requesting district status to separate from the Asunafo North Municipality,” Akufo-Addo shared.
“I have accepted their petition, and the process to grant this status is underway. The Attorney General has been tasked with initiating the legal processes to formalise the creation of the new district,” he added, signalling a decisive step forward for Mim’s aspirations.
Situated within the Asunafo North Municipality, Mim is the largest town in the Ahafo Region, with a population of 31,538.
Known for its vibrant timber, cocoa, and cashew industries, the town is a key economic player with direct road links to significant hubs such as Kumasi, Kenyase, Dormaa Ahenkro, and Sefwi, positioning it for further growth.
Mim also serves as the heart of the Mim Traditional Area, encompassing communities such as Kasapin, Kwodwo Addaikrom, Bediako, Gambia No. 1 and 2, Gyasikrom, and Dominase.
This elevation to district status is expected to empower Mim’s local governance and foster development aligned with the aspirations of its people.
