Mentors Chess Academy, in collaboration with Imagination Africa, presents the African Genius Chess Championship, which empowers students’ critical thinking analysis.
The African Genius Chess Championship is opened to kids and young adults between the ages of 7 and 20.
The coordinator for Mentors Chess Academy, David Acheampong, stated that chess is very important for students because it helps them to be critical thinkers.
According to Acheampong, students approach many aspects of life in the same way that chess is played: “You want to be able to think, look ahead, and predict what is going to happen.
Speaking with Elvis Crystal on 995 Rush Hour on Thursday (19 September), Acheampong, “We adopted the African Genius name just to communicate that chess also levels the playing field, no matter the background you are coming from.
“If you have brains, you should be able to play. So, that’s why we adopted it. So, we give everybody a chance to come and participate.
Explaining the concept of chess, Acheampong said that chess communicates choices and consequences.
“I think I would describe it as a board game played by two players and on a 64-square board. And the whole idea is like a battlefield of two kingdoms that have gone at each other.
“It’s more of a game of strategy, a game of tactics, and your aim is to outwit your opponent. Yes, so that’s what the game is all about.
According to Acheampong, a number of schools have already registered to participate, including Ghana International School, Galaxy School, Roman Range, and others.
“All these schools are already signed up. And we’re expecting a very big tournament than we’ve ever had in Ghana.”
Imagination Africa is an organisation that empowers underprivileged children through structured programs, fostering personal growth and nurturing talent in sports, arts, and academics.
The organisation promotes inclusivity by giving children from different backgrounds equal opportunities, lowering barriers to participation, and encouraging fairness.
The African Genius Chess Championship 2024 will be on 21st September at 9am sharp at the Legon City Mall in Accra.
