Forty young women have gained valuable digital marketing skills through MEST Africa’s GROW Digital Marketing Programme, aimed at revolutionizing marketing strategies across diverse industries.
The initiative, a collaboration between MEST Africa, Whizzy Innovation Hub, Generations Ghana, and funded by the MasterCard Foundation, focuses on empowering women aged 18 to 35 with advanced training in digital marketing.
The programme is designed to provide young women with the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in today’s tech-driven marketing landscape.
Running for three months of intensive training, followed by a two-month internship, the programme equips participants with the skills to excel in competitive job markets. With its goal to help women succeed in the evolving world of digital marketing, graduates leave the programme fully prepared to secure jobs in industries that are increasingly reliant on digital expertise.
Diana Dickson, Programme Administrator of MEST Africa, highlighted the importance of providing young women, especially university graduates facing unemployment, with essential skills that bridge the gap between academic qualifications and employability.
“Out of five employers need extra skills aside your degrees. We have a lot of SMEs in Kumasi who don’t have online presence at all. With the skills they have acquired from us will be able to help these ones scale their businesses,” she said.
By focusing on women, the GROW Digital Marketing Programme aims to close the gender gap in the tech industry and motivate young women to complement their academic qualifications with practical technical skills.
Akwasi Boateng, Training Coordinator at Whizzy Innovation Hub, spoke about the challenges encountered during the programme. He noted that while the programme does not guarantee jobs, it has played a key role in opening doors for employment opportunities.
“80 young women have graduated since the programme started, and 40 women have just completed the second cohort. The first cohort successfully secured jobs in the industry, and today, we celebrate the second cohort’s graduation. We are committed to ensuring they find job opportunities as well,” he said.
Boateng also shared plans to expand the programme via online platforms to reach a wider audience of women across Ghana. This digital expansion will significantly enhance the programme’s impact, offering more young women the chance to access transformative training in digital marketing.
Some of the graduates shared how the programme transformed her skills and career prospects.
“The programme equipped me with skills like video editing, public speaking, photography, and content creation. Despite its intensity, I excelled, even impressing during my internship by crafting a content calendar strategy without prior guidance,” one of them recalled.
