Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated that the 24-hour economy policy he is preaching in the 2024 election will be voluntary.
He explains that the government will introduce the policy and create a secretariat where people interested in the policy will register.
After the registration process, the government will ensure that these companies hooked on to the 24-hour economy will be provided support and subsidies to help them function.
Speaking on Koforidua-based Sunrise FM, John Dramani Mahama said, “The 24-hour Economy is voluntary; it is not compulsory. When we come, we will introduce the policy and have a secretariat where companies will register, after which we will go and look at the organization and see how best fit their organization can run the policy. Organizations that are interested in the policy will have the opportunity to register and will enjoy some subsidies from the government.
When you go abroad, they do this. It is not limited to factories but services too. These companies must be able to employ more people for different shifts. For example, when you run a restaurant, but because of the cost of light, so from a certain time, you close the restaurant to save power. When we come, we will look into this and see to it that the restaurant will run longer hours and with the longer hours you cannot use the same people.
Apart from that, there is the special agro-processing zone that I am speaking about. We want people to come and build factories in those zones, which will come under the 24-hour economy will work morning and night shifts. Even in Accra there are factories that work three shifts and when we help them they can pick more workers,” he said in an interview.
