2025 Volvo XC90 unveils fresh design, enhanced technology, and smoother ride in major update

The Volvo EX90 is expected to go on sale later this month, but for those who are not quite ready to make the leap to an all-electric model, Volvo has just revealed its 2025 XC90.

This is a refresh of its largest SUV—not an all-new design, but there are some big updates, including many changes under the hood that the brand has yet to disclose. Up front, the most obvious change to the XC90 is a freshened version of its trademark slatted grille treatment.

With the Profile: New headlamps have a slight, sleek feeling and now float into that familiar grille that has been dropped down an inch or so; the contents of LEDs are also fresh for 2020. Updated taillights and new wheels join the sides of this Venza.

From a mechanical standpoint, not much changes with the 2025 XC90. Two gas engines featuring 48-volt mild-hybrid help, plus a plug-in (PHEV) choice for the B5 and Recharge models, are part of Volvo’s range. While no details are out yet, the specs would nearly match those of the models for 2024 provided above.

The Cayenne will be just as heavy, but it should handle better courtesy of the adaptive dampers that are now standard and adapt to suit road conditions. For 2025, the optional air suspension from previous models will remain on offer too.

The biggest changes to the interior of the XC90, however, with Volvo updating dashboard and adding a new central infotainment screen – again likely to have shared software from EX30 and ultimately XT90.

The XC90 has a row of buttons below the touchscreen for physical controls, as opposed to the all-touch approach that made its way into new and facelifted models with the EX90. Centre console have the classy twist-to-start knob and Orrefors crystal shift lever

Vertical air vents are better suited to the shape of the screen, and also new in this case is an updated dashboard trim with recycled fabrics. Increased ambient lighting for a better nightlight effect.

Volvo has also moved the wireless phone charger from just ahead of the shift lever to rearward on top of a new central tunnel. On the other end, there is also better noise insulation in the XC90 which helps to lower road and wind noises.

Volvo has confirmed orders for the new 2025 XC90 have opened today and that initial deliveries are due late in 2024. But ask for the later model, as this version becomes a 2025 ½ model year vehicle. The 2025 XC90 before the EA shift will continue to be offered by Volvo until it completes its transition with a new update.
