14-year-old Hephzibah Tandoh to make Olympiad debut

Ghana’s 14-year-old chess sensation, Hephzibah Tandoh, is set to make her debut at the 45th Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, on Friday (13 September).

She will compete with Ghana’s female national chess team, the Golden Knights, as they face Panama in Round 3.

Tandoh, the youngest chess player to ever qualify for Ghana’s national team, replaces Dzidzor Esi Dotse in the line-up and is expected to take on 33-year-old Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Maria Angelica Carrillo Marval of Panama.

This marks a significant milestone for the young player, who is quickly establishing herself as one of the country’s rising stars in chess.

Her inclusion comes after Ghana’s 3.5-0.5 victory over the US Virgin Islands in Round 2 on Thursday (12 September), which saw the team secure their first points of the tournament

The Golden Knights will be looking to build on this momentum as they aim to improve on their 142nd-place finish at the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai, India, back in 2022.

Tandoh’s rise in 2024 has been remarkable, with her rating points increasing from 1161 to 1516, making her Ghana’s eighth-ranked female chess player.

This surge in ranking follows strong performances at the 2023 National Individual Championships Finals—Women and the 2024 African Youth Chess Championship.
