Zou Jingyuan defends Olympic parallel bars title

China’s Zou Jingyuan made history on Monday (5 August) by successfully defending his Olympic men’s parallel bars title at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The three-time world champion edged out Ukraine’s Illia Kovtun to retain the gold medal he won in Tokyo 2020.

Jingyuan scored 16.200, just short of his 16.233 score set in Tokyo 2020, while Kovtun claimed silver with 15.500. Japan’s rising star Shinnosuke Oka took bronze on 15.300.

With his victory, Jingyuan became the first man to win back-to-back Olympic parallel bars titles since Japan’s Sawao Kato in 1976.

Germany’s Lukas Dauser, the silver medallist in Tokyo, finished seventh with 13.700, while Turkey’s Ferhat Arican, the 2020 bronze medallist, was fifth with 15.100.

Jingyuan’s gold medal takes China’s medal tally at Paris 2024 to 49 (21 gold, 16 silver and 12 bronze), extending its lead at the top of the medal table ahead of the United States and host nation France.
