Popular Ghanaian actor Yaw Dabo has passionately defended former President John Agyekum Kufuor against derogatory remarks made by Dela Edem, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team.
Edem, during a TV XYZ program, described the 85-year-old former president as “evil” and attributed his health issues to a supposed curse, sparking widespread condemnation.
In a video widely circulated online, Yaw Dabo expressed his outrage, calling Edem’s comments an insult to Ghanaian traditions and elders. “President Kufuor is over 80 years old. At that age, it’s natural for one to require a wheelchair. Insulting him for that shows a lack of respect and upbringing,” Dabo stated firmly.
The actor also issued a stern caution to Edem, reminding him of the cultural prohibition against youth making disrespectful remarks about their elders. “Tradition warns us against such utterances. Don’t forget, death comes for us all. Will you reach his glorious age?” he added, visibly agitated by the controversy.
Dabo further highlighted Kufuor’s enduring influence on Ghana’s political landscape, emphasizing the global respect he commands. “World leaders still consult him for his wisdom. And you, Edem, are not even worthy to be a gateman at his residence,” Dabo remarked, berating the NDC communicator for what he called an unnecessary and baseless attack.
Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong statement condemning Edem’s comments. Signed by the party’s National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, the statement described the remarks as “despicable, shameful, and disgraceful.”
It went on to highlight Kufuor’s legacy, including the introduction of groundbreaking policies like the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the School Feeding Program, and Free Maternal Care, which continue to benefit millions of Ghanaians.
“Mr. Kufuor’s legacy is beyond reproach. He remains a revered figure not just in Ghana but globally,” the statement read.
