Wontumi FM’s Oheneba Asiedu granted bail over election misinformation

Kumasi-based radio and television presenter Oheneba Nana Asiedu has been granted bail by the Ghana Police Service following his arrest on Saturday (23 November).

His arrest stemmed from allegations of publishing false news that could potentially disrupt the upcoming December general elections.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command invited Oheneba Nana Asiedu on Friday (22 November), to address accusations that he encouraged voters to cast their ballots for presidential candidates on separate days, contrary to electoral laws.

The Ghana Police Service described the presenter’s statement, which circulated widely on social media, as “false and likely to disturb the public peace.” Officials emphasized that such misinformation could confuse voters and erode public trust in the electoral process.

Electoral laws in Ghana mandate that voting for all candidates occurs on the same day. The police have flagged Asiedu’s comments as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public, raising concerns over their potential to disrupt election preparations.

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has also condemned the incident, highlighting the importance of disseminating accurate information during elections to maintain peace and order. The NCCE called on the public to rely solely on official sources for electoral updates.

The police reiterated their commitment to ensuring a peaceful election and issued a stern warning to the media about the consequences of spreading unverified information.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, focusing on the intent and potential impact of the presenter’s remarks. As part of his bail conditions, Oheneba Nana Asiedu must report to the police periodically while the case proceeds.
