Winfred Yavi smashes Olympic record to win 3,000m steeplechase gold

Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi shattered the Olympic record (OR) to claim gold in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games on Tuesday (6 August).

The 24-year-old Kenyan-born athlete clocked a stunning time of 8:52.76, obliterating the previous mark of 8:58.81 set by Russia’s Gulnara Samitova-Galkina in Beijing 2008.

Yavi’s victory was a dominant performance, with the silver and bronze medallists, Peruth Chemutai of Uganda and Kenya’s Faith Cherotich, respectively, also surpassing Samitova-Galkina’s long-standing record.

Chemutai finished in 8:53.34, while Cherotich clocked in at 8:55.15.

The race was a historic moment for women’s steeplechase, with four athletes breaking the Olympic record.

Even France’s Alice Finot, who finished fourth, managed to dip under Samitova-Galkina’s time.

Yavi’s gold medal is a significant achievement for Bahrain, making her only the third athlete to win Olympic gold for the Gulf nation.

She follows in the footsteps of Ruth Jebet, who won the same event at Rio 2016.

Speaking after her victory, Yavi expressed her delight: “This is like a dream come true. It’s something special. It means a lot to me and also to the country.”

The Bahraini star’s journey to the Olympic podium has been remarkable. Originally from Kenya, she opted to represent Bahrain after failing to make the Kenyan national team after numerous trials.
