Kwesi Nyantakyi, the former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), is confident that the Black Stars still have a chance to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but he insists that crucial changes are needed to turn the team’s fortunes around.
In an interview on Lawson TV, Nyantakyi addressed concerns over the team’s recent struggles and the way forward.
“I don’t think all is lost, but we must fix it,” he stated firmly. “We have World Cup qualifiers in March against Chad and Madagascar, and I believe that the right players will have to be called for these games.”
Nyantakyi emphasized the importance of strengthening the team by looking to the future, with a particular focus on the youth.
“We need to revamp the youth teams and focus on their transition to the senior side to strengthen the Black Stars,” he explained. He pointed out the example of Ghana’s U-20 team, which achieved historic success by winning the World Cup in Egypt in 2009.
“If we look at Ghana’s U-20 team, who won the World Cup in Egypt in 2009, they were successfully integrated into the Black Stars,” Nyantakyi continued.
“This integration boosted the chances of the Black Stars, helping them reach the finals of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola and almost making it to the semi-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.”
Nyantakyi believes that such success can be replicated, but it requires careful selection and commitment.
“It should not be the normal call-ups but players who are ready and dedicated to play for the country and the shirt,” he said.
