Traders at the makeshift Takoradi Market are appealing to authorities to assign security personnel to help the market centre due to activities of armed robbery.
Some of these traders who spoke with Asaase News say that the stealing that has been going on is mostly perpetrated at night by people yet to be identified.
These traders and shop owners, who were relocated from the Takoradi market circle to a temporary market site, are appealing to City authorities to ensure the provision of security men who will keep watch during the night to avoid stealing of their goods, a practice that has been going on for some time.
They appealed to the authorities to assign security personnel to guard the market center to protect their items from being stolen by such criminals.
Elizabeth Quansah, a yam seller, is worried that, almost on a weekly basis, victims of the criminal act will cry and shout because of their stolen goods.
Examples of stuff stolen include tubers of yam, gallons of oil, vegetables and other food and non-food items.
She said, “The stealing has been going on for years, if not more than four, five years, and we call on STMA and the government to, as a matter of urgency, deal with this robbery in the market.”
Rosemond Ofori, who sells smoked fish, shared similar sentiments, saying, this worrying and unaddressed concern had made most traders stop paying market tolls to STMA as a form of protest against the criminal act.
According to the traders, they intend to demonstrate to express their frustration if nothing is done to halt the stealing.
“Buying and selling are not thriving as expected in this new market, we cannot afford to run at a loss whenever we come to the market to find out their goods were stolen.”
They, however, called on government to hasten the pace to complete the stalled Takoradi Market Circle project for them to move in.
