#SafeMotorway4All: Akufo-Addo cuts sod for Accra-Tema Motorway expansion

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday (26 August) cut the sod for the Accra-Tema Motorway expansion project.

The move marks the beginning of the country’s first public-private partnership (PPP) in road infrastructure development.

This announcement also comes in response to Asaase Radio’s #SafeMotorway4All campaign.

The #SafeMotorway4All campaign, which has advocated for safer Accra-Tema Motorway, has raised public awareness about the need for immediate infrastructural upgrades.

In his address, President Akufo-Addo hailed the project as a groundbreaking achievement for Ghana, blending the expertise and resources of both the public and private sectors. Supported by the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), the project aims to not only improve Ghana’s transportation network but also set a new benchmark in infrastructure development through efficient, sustainable, and fiscally responsible practices.

“This is not just a road; we are building the future. The PPP model embodies our ideals of efficiency, sustainability, and fiscal responsibility,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

He emphasised that the project reflects Ghana’s innovative capacity and leadership in infrastructure development.

The Accra-Tema Motorway expansion will cover three major sections: from the Accra-Tema Motorway Roundabout to the Tetteh-Quarshie Interchange, from the Interchange to the Apenkwa Interchange, and from the Apenkwa Interchange to Neoplan Junction on the Accra-Kumasi Road.

According to Francis Asenso-Boakye, the Minister of Roads and Highways, the phased reconstruction is designed to ensure minimal disruption to commuters while delivering a world-class road network.

The Accra-Tema Motorway, which has long been a critical artery linking the capital to the industrial hub of Tema, has suffered from significant wear and tear over the years.

The expansion project aims to alleviate congestion, reduce travel times, and boost economic growth in the region.

Since its inception, the #SafeMotorway4All campaign has actively engaged stakeholders and policymakers, highlighting the dangers posed by the deteriorating conditions of the motorway, which has been prone to accidents and frequent delays.
