Safeguard integrity in upcoming polls – KAIPTC to election observers

A group of 35 women and youth, selected from constituencies or areas identified as election-related violence hotspots in the Ashanti Region, have completed a three-day election observation training in Kumasi.

The training, organized by the Women, Youth Peace, and Security Institute (WYPSI) of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), was aimed at equipping participants with the skills needed to monitor the electoral process, ensuring transparency, accountability, and fairness during the upcoming general election.

The initiative, funded by the Government of Sweden, is part of a broader effort to empower women and youth in conflict resolution, social cohesion, and fostering peaceful dialogue at both community and national levels. Participants were trained to promote vigilance, fairness, and transparency throughout the electoral process, which is vital to ensuring a credible and peaceful election.

Air Commodore David Akrong, Deputy Commandant of KAIPTC, addressed the participants during the training, emphasizing the importance of the initiative in preparing them for the critical role they will play in the election.

He explained that the training was designed not only to enhance their ability to monitor the elections but also to highlight the significance of impartiality and the prevention of electoral violence.

“Election observers play a critical role in detecting and preventing electoral fraud such as ballot stuffing, voter intimidation, and vote-buying,” Air Cdre Akrong said.

“By reporting irregularities and inconsistencies, you will help ensure the integrity of the electoral process. It is essential to ensure that the information you collect is based on facts, and that any reports you make are free from personal biases or interpretations,” he added.

This training in the Ashanti Region is part of a wider plan to train a total of 100 election observers across four regions, including Greater Accra, Northern, and Volta, to contribute to a free, fair, and transparent election process.

Ashanti Regional Focal Point for Women in Law and Development in Africa Madam Aba Oppong urged participants to take advantage of the training programme to enable them to play their roles effectively ahead of the polls.
